Russia in the Twentieth Century
Northwestern University professor Gary Saul Morson will discuss Russia in the twentieth century. Given that the Russian Revolution happened a century ago, Prof. Morson also will present an opportunity to reflect on the history that affected so much of humanity.
Prof. Morson has won numerous teaching awards and his undergraduate class introducing the Russian novel has long been the most popular course at Northwestern and the best enrolled Russian literature class in the nation. The course is devoted to an in-depth reading of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s Brothers Karamazov and Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina.
Educated at Oxford and Yale, Prof. Morson is the Lawrence B. Dumas Professor of the Arts and Humanities and Professor of Slavic Languages, and the author or editor of 19 books and approximately 150 articles in scholarly and national publications. He is a member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences and the recipient of numerous awards and honors. In recent years, he has also become known for defending the humanities in various national publications. This event is part of the Wilmette Public Library’s 2018 One Book, Everybody Reads series, which is featuring author Amor Towles’s bestselling novel, A Gentleman in Moscow, this spring.
